Leadership in Turbulent Times: Finding Growth in Adversity

Dr. Will Sparks will explore the life and leadership lessons identified by Doris Kearns Goodwin in her New York Times best seller “Leadership in Turbulent Times.” This session will examine the insights and observations of US Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson as they found meaning and profound growth as a result of the various struggles they experienced while in office. The session will also provide key lessons and strategies for participants to apply in their personal and professional lives.

Will Sparks, Ph.D., serves as the Dennis Thompson Chair and Professor of Leadership at the McColl School of Business, where he has taught for 20 years.

This is part of a mini-series focused on Queens University of Charlotte’s 2020-21 Common Read featuring renowned presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Leadership: In Turbulent Times. Her book offers context for our turbulent times and demonstrates how today’s leaders can learn from the past. The Common Read Program, in partnership with The Learning Society, is a cross-campus, multidisciplinary experience that connects students, staff and faculty in a shared intellectual experience, inspiring curiosity and sparking conversation.
