About this Event
2319 Wellesley Ave., Charlotte, NC
The History Department, with DICE and the Chaplain’s office, is delighted to welcome Pamela Grundy to campus as part of the Preyer Lecture Series, which this academic year is focused on Charlotte's history. This is a rescheduled event, as it was originally to be held on January 22nd; but we are pleased that Dr. Grundy could find another time. Her talk will examine more than a century of efforts to educate Black children here in Charlotte. It starts with the city's long history of segregated education, moves through the period of busing for desegregation and then considers the resegregation of the present day. In addition to spotlighting some of Charlotte's most influential Black educators, it charts the processes by which Black educational opportunities have been shaped by a shifting array of factors that have included community support, ongoing battles for resources, and broader developments in local and national politics and culture. Please join us on January 22nd for a reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. preceding Douglas's lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Greenhoot Recital Hall.
